Moulin Rouge vs Amor Rosso is the Red Light District choice people still get wrong, because half the internet calls Amor Rosso the Hospital Bar. The nurse-themed bar those listings describe is gone.
Choose badly and you pay for a seat when you wanted a drink, or turn up at a bar with no running order when you wanted a stage. Below I put both doors side by side: price, hours, and what the ticket actually covers.

Both venues sit on Oudezijds Achterburgwal, the canal that runs down the middle of the district. Moulin Rouge is at number 5-7. Amor Rosso is at number 97, with the Banana Bar at number 37 between the two.
I walk the stretch between them in about three minutes, and so will you. Do not take a taxi for that. If you are planning a route, our Red Light District map shows both doors and everything in between.

The venue at Oudezijds Achterburgwal 97 now trades as AMOR ROSSO – BY CASA ROSSO, and the new name is on the front of the building. Same address, same phone number, +31 (0)20 627 89 54. The old hospitalbar.nl web address redirects to the Amor Rosso site.
The address kept trading. By late May 2026 a neighbourhood festival listing was already describing it as an erotic bar with signature cocktails, a DJ, pole dancers and drag queens. Whether the doors stayed open through the changeover was never published, and nor was the changeover date, so treat anyone who quotes you a day as guessing.
The Hospital Bar ran a medical theme, and it ran it hard. Dancers in nurse outfits served the drinks, worked the pole and sold lap dances that a “doctor” theatrically prescribed, with hospital beds used as seating. Third-party listings from that era put entry at around €25 including one drink, with doors from roughly 19:00 to 02:00, and to 03:00 at weekends.
Those numbers are dead. Do not turn up at 97 expecting them, and ignore any listing still quoting around €25 and nurse outfits.
| Hospital Bar (until 2026) | Amor Rosso (now) | |
|---|---|---|
| Concept | Hospital theme: nurses, hospital beds as seating, lap dances “prescribed” by a “doctor” | Erotic cocktail bar with pole dancers, drag queens and a DJ |
| Entry price | Listings of the time quoted entry at around €25 with one drink; how you bought it was not recorded | Entry sold online through the venue’s own website; door policy not published |
| Performers | Dancers in nurse outfits who served drinks and worked the pole | Pole dancers and drag queens, no theme |
| Extras | Lap dances sold inside, separately from entry | Not published by the venue |
| Name on the building | Hospital Bar | AMOR ROSSO – BY CASA ROSSO |
The ownership thread explains the new name. The Banana Bar’s own history page names Jan Otten, the Red Light District entrepreneur who died in 2024, whose group also runs Casa Rosso, the Erotic Museum, the peep show and the bar at number 97 that traded as the Hospital Bar. Amor Rosso signs itself “by Casa Rosso”, so the family connection is now on the facade rather than buried in a company record.
This is where the two venues really split. Moulin Rouge sells you a show and lets you buy drinks separately. Amor Rosso sells you a room with one drink already in the price.
| Money question | Moulin Rouge | Amor Rosso (ex-Hospital Bar) | Banana Bar (for scale) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry from | €40 per person, higher on Thursday to Sunday evenings | From €39 per person booked online, checked September 2026. The booking page shows the price in your own currency, so it reads as about $44 in US dollars | €50 per person |
| Drinks included | None. You buy at the bar or from a server inside | One drink included in the ticket | Four |
| What the price buys | A seat and a programme of roughly 50 minutes | Entry to the bar, with the ticket valid for 8 hours | 60 minutes inside |
| How you book | Online with instant confirmation and a mobile ticket, or at the door | Online through the venue’s own website; the ticket terms name skip-the-line entry | At the door only |
| Cancellation | Standard tickets are generally non-refundable; optional refund protection can be added at checkout | Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, per the ticket terms | No booking exists to cancel |
| Paying at the door | Yes, at the same price. Off-peak you can often walk up; Thursday to Sunday a stage-side seat is not guaranteed without booking | Not published by the venue | The only way in |
| Drink prices inside | Bar menu prices, not published online | Not published | Nothing else included |
Read that €40 at Moulin Rouge as a floor, not a total. Thursday to Sunday evenings cost more, and every drink is extra. For the wider picture, our Red Light District prices overview puts all of this next to the rest of the neighbourhood.
Moulin Rouge opens earlier at weekends, which is useful if you want the show done before dinner. Amor Rosso keeps one set of hours all week. Both run until 02:00.
| At the door | Moulin Rouge | Amor Rosso (ex-Hospital Bar) |
|---|---|---|
| Address | Oudezijds Achterburgwal 5-7 | Oudezijds Achterburgwal 97 |
| Opening hours | Mon-Thu 20:00-02:00, Fri-Sat 16:30-02:00, Sun 18:00-02:00 | Daily 20:00-02:00 |
| Format | Seated erotic theatre, about four live acts of roughly ten minutes, rotating through the evening | Cocktail bar rather than a theatre, with a DJ, pole dancers and drag queens reported at the address. The venue does not publish whether you sit or stand |
| Fixed start time | No fixed curtain. About four acts of roughly ten minutes rotate all evening, so you join the running order and see a full cycle of about 50 minutes | No |
| Age limit | 18+, official photo ID checked at the door | 18+ under the ticket terms; the venue publishes no age rule |
| Dress code | None. Casual is normal | Smart casual, stated on the venue’s own site |
| Photos and filming | Not allowed inside | No policy published |
| Accessibility | Stairs; not suitable for wheelchairs | Not published |
Carry a passport or ID card. Moulin Rouge checks official photo ID at the door, and Amor Rosso publishes no age rule of its own, so take ID there too rather than find out. The wider street rules, including the fines for photographing the windows, are in our guide to Red Light District laws.
These gaps matter, because they are exactly what people stop me on the street to ask.
What the ticket terms do state, checked September 2026: 18+, one drink included, eight hours of validity, skip-the-line entry and free cancellation up to 24 hours before. That is the only written commitment attached to the place. If any of the gaps above would spoil your evening, ring the bar on +31 (0)20 627 89 54 before you walk over.

You sit down, the lights drop and the acts rotate. Expect roughly 50 minutes of programme, about four live acts of some ten minutes each, running through the evening. Arriving at 21:40 works as well as arriving at 20:00, because you join the running order rather than a start time.
The acts stay on the stage and you stay in your seat, and drinks come from the bar or from a server during the show. That fixed format, with a price and a length you know before you walk in, is the biggest practical difference between these two venues. Our full Moulin Rouge Amsterdam review walks through the acts and the room in detail, or you can book Moulin Rouge tickets straight away.
Amor Rosso’s own site is thin. It publishes daily hours of 20:00 to 02:00, links to Instagram and TikTok, a Get tickets button and a photo of the facade with the new name on it. There is a guest note about a drag show night, but no schedule and no price appear anywhere on it.
A neighbourhood festival listing from May 2026 describes a signature cocktail, a DJ, pole dancers and drag queens at this address. That listing, rather than the bar itself, is the only description of what happens in the room. The ticket copy calls it a relaxed, sociable alternative to a sit-down show, which is a fair description of what you are buying.
There is no published schedule, so what you see depends on when you walk in. That flexibility is genuinely the venue’s strength. It is also why two people can visit on the same night and come away with completely different verdicts.
If you want the old Hospital Bar formula – a bar, dancers, drinks bundled into one door price – the Banana Bar at number 37 is the nearest living equivalent. It charges €50 for 60 minutes with four drinks, door sales only (checked September 2026). It is on the same canal, between the two venues on this page.

Amor Rosso wins on freedom. No seated theatre gives you a drink in your hand and the option to leave after twenty minutes. That is a genuine win for Amor Rosso.
Moulin Rouge wins on certainty. You know the seat price, the programme length and the door rules before you walk in, and you can book Moulin Rouge tickets in advance or pay the same price at the door. Thursday to Sunday evenings cost more than a Tuesday.
The two addresses sit on the same canal, so both in one evening is easy. Start at Moulin Rouge at number 5-7, then follow the water until the numbers reach 97. You pass the Banana Bar at number 37 on the way, which tells you that you are going the right way.
Neither venue runs to a curtain time, so the order is yours. Take the seat first and let the bar have whatever is left of the night. The Amor Rosso ticket terms give eight hours of validity against a six-hour opening night, so the window is longer than the bar is open, and nothing states whether it covers re-entry.
Two rules apply outside both doors. Do not photograph the windows or the women, and do not drink alcohol on the street: both carry on-the-spot fines.
The building is still open, but not under that name. Oudezijds Achterburgwal 97 now trades as Amor Rosso, and the rebrand was in place by May 2026. The old web address redirects to the new one.
Yes. Same address, same phone number, and the same group behind the bar: the group built by the late Jan Otten, named on the Banana Bar’s own history page, which also runs Casa Rosso, the Erotic Museum, the peep show and the bar at number 97. Only the name and the concept changed; the address, the phone number and the ownership did not.
It is an erotic cocktail bar on Oudezijds Achterburgwal, branded “by Casa Rosso”. You pay entry and one drink is included in the ticket, which the terms give eight hours of validity. Pole dancers, drag queens and a DJ have been reported at the address rather than scheduled as a show.
Because the changeover was never pushed out to the directories. The venue introduced itself locally as a new bar and redirected its old web address, but the listing sites, maps and review pages were never updated, so the old text survives. If a listing still describes nurses, hospital beds or around €25 entry, it is describing the venue before the rebrand.
Moulin Rouge starts at €40 per person, more on Thursday to Sunday evenings, with drinks bought separately. Amor Rosso started from €39 per person online in September 2026 with one drink included, so the two sit within a euro of each other before you order anything.
The acts rotate through the evening, so you see a full cycle of about 50 minutes whenever you arrive within opening hours. There is no single curtain to be late for. Check your confirmation for whether your ticket names a date only or a date and a time.
The venue does not publish a door policy, so I cannot promise you will get in without booking. It sells entry online through its own site, and that is the only route it names. Ring +31 (0)20 627 89 54 before you walk over on a Friday or Saturday.
The nurse outfits, the hospital beds and the prescribed lap dances belonged to the old concept and are gone. Pole dancing survived the rebrand. Whether lap dances are still sold, and at what price, is not published anywhere by the venue.
Moulin Rouge opens 20:00-02:00 Monday to Thursday, 16:30-02:00 Friday and Saturday, and 18:00-02:00 on Sunday. Amor Rosso publishes daily 20:00-02:00. Both sets of hours were checked in September 2026 and can change.
Yes. The ticket copy sells it as a relaxed, sociable alternative to a sit-down show, which suits two people who want to talk with a drink in hand. Moulin Rouge also takes couples, with the difference that you are seated and facing a stage.
Moulin Rouge has no dress code – everyday clothes are fine – and it is strictly 18+ with official photo ID checked at the door. Amor Rosso states a smart casual dress code on its own website, so leave the trainers and sportswear at the hotel. Amor Rosso publishes no age rule itself; the 18+ minimum comes from its ticket terms, so carry ID anyway.
Book Moulin Rouge if you want a seat, a 50-minute programme and a price you can predict. Choose Amor Rosso if you want a drink in hand, no running order and the freedom to leave after twenty minutes. You can reserve Moulin Rouge tickets online with instant confirmation and a mobile ticket.
