The staff at coffeeshop the Jolly Joker are real nice. The smokes are okay, but its just the feeling of this coffee shop which is really nice. In summer when its warm, you can get the seat by the open window. The view down the street is awesome. Coffeeshop The Jolly Joker is a people watchers paradise! You’ll have a great view on Amsterdam’s New Market and The Waag. Which is the oldest non-religious building of Amsterdam. In this area of Amsterdam’s Red Light District there’s always something happening. And the little upstairs is cool too.
Did you know that the Red Light District is actually the oldest area of Amsterdam?
Here’s how coffeeshop the Jolly Joker looked like before it was a coffeeshop:
Coffeeshop the Jolly Joker used to be a so called coffee house (or in Dutch: Koffiehuis). It was a social place where people met each other, while they enjoyed a cup of coffee or tea.
You know what’s weird about some shops in Amsterdam? Some of them do not accept payments by card. We really do not understand that, it’s 2015 for crying out loud! Some people don’t even carry cash money anymore, as they are so used to pay by card. It could be that some coffeeshops in Amsterdam don’t want to register the number of weed transactions, because they are afraid for the local authorities.
Anyway, the good thing about coffeeshop The Jolly Joker is that they do offer payments by card! Thank you for that, Jolly Joker! You’re one of the few who haven’t been living under a rock. Thumbs up!
And this is what this street looked like in 1980:
In front of the Jolly Joker there is also Cafe de Zon, one of the oldest cafes in this area.
During our tours we will pass by Coffeeshop The Jolly Joker. It’s located in Chinatown, one of the highlights during the Red Light District Tour. An area which may not be missed, as it has much history which you’ll find very interesting. Find out why this street used to be a no-go area. Join our Amsterdam Red Light District tours.
