“Neighbourhood” here means Burgwallen-Oude Zijde, the official district that the city uses for nearly all of its figures on De Wallen. It covers the whole district, not only the streets with red-lit windows.

How big is the Red Light District?

The neighbourhood covers 40.47 hectares and has 4,714 residents, according to the city’s WallenCijfers report of June 2024. The city’s open data gives 4,684 for 1 January 2026. Half of those residents are between 23 and 39 years old, and 66% of households are one person.

The average resident has lived there 6.1 years, and 64% of homes are private rentals.

The same report counts 10,792 people working in the neighbourhood across 2,056 business locations: 31% offices, 20% hotels, bars and restaurants, and 11% shops.

How many windows are there in the Red Light District?

The city puts the current number of sex work places in the Wallen area at 247, in a document dated 2 December 2025. That is the most recent official figure we found, and it comes from the city’s written response to the consultation on the Erotic Centre plan.

Older counts use different borders, so they do not form one clean series. The table shows what each figure covers.

The well-known “482 windows” is real, but it is one of three official starting figures: 482 from a 2007 count, 476 from a 2006 baseline, and 470 from a 2013 recount applied back to 2007. The Amsterdam Court of Audit treats 470 as the most accurate.

How many windows Project 1012 closed

Project 1012 was the city’s plan to cut crime-prone businesses in postcode area 1012, including window brothels and coffeeshops. The first target was to close 192 of 482 windows, and in 2015 the council lowered it to 140.

By 2017 the city had closed 112 windows. The Court of Audit puts the result at 358 open windows, a drop of almost 25% from 470.

What happened to the Erotic Centre

The previous city government wanted to move 100 workplaces out of De Wallen to a new Erotic Centre in the south of the city, leaving about 147 in the Wallen area. The city’s own estimate for that building was up to 1.5 million visitors a year.

That plan has stopped. On 3 June 2026 the new city government presented its 2026–2030 coalition agreement, and the city states that it will not continue with the Erotic Centre as described in the December 2025 project plan.

How many people visit the Red Light District?

We found no official annual visitor count for De Wallen. We looked in the city’s Wallen figures, its two city-centre monitors and the Erotic Centre papers, and none of them gives a yearly total.

What the city does publish is this: an estimated 87% of the people in public space in the neighbourhood are visitors, as opposed to residents, workers or students. That estimate dates from 2020.

For the city as a whole there are official estimates. In 2024 Amsterdam had just over 14 million unique day visitors, who made almost 27 million day visits, and almost 10 million overnight visitors, who stayed almost 23 million nights.

More than 80% of those overnight stays were by visitors from abroad. The largest markets are the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany and France.

What residents report

In the 2024 safety survey (Veiligheidsmonitor), 65% of residents of Burgwallen-Oude Zijde reported much nuisance from tourists. That is the highest share of any city-centre district.

The 2023 figures below come from an earlier city report and compare the neighbourhood with the city average. Its tourism figure (58%) is not published on the same basis as the 65%, so do not read the two as a trend.

In 2023 residents gave the neighbourhood 6.1 out of 10, against 7.5 for Amsterdam, and it stood at 7.6 in 2013.

Residents rate daytime safety 8.0 out of 10 and evening safety 5.7, where the city average for the evening is 7.2.

Clean streets score 4.9 out of 10 in 2023, against 6.2 for the city. Nuisance from litter scores lower still, at 3.4.

Crime and safety in numbers

Theft is the main registered crime in the neighbourhood, not violence. The table combines the city’s two 2023 top-five lists for Burgwallen-Oude Zijde, one for high-volume crime and one for high-impact crime.

In mid-2024 the city deployed 14 to 15 pairs of hosts in red jackets on Fridays and Saturdays and 8 pairs on Thursdays. Six municipal enforcement officers worked the weekend evenings and nights.

What is sex work worth to the Dutch economy?

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) estimates that prostitution added €0.7 billion to the Dutch economy in 2021. The figure includes the legal part of the trade and was published in the 2024 revision of the national accounts.

A larger CBS number also circulates. CBS puts drugs, prostitution and illegal tobacco trade together at €4.5 billion, or 0.5% of GDP, and prostitution is the fourth-largest part of that after cannabis, cocaine and synthetic drugs.

There is no official revenue figure for De Wallen or for Amsterdam’s sex businesses. Our page on prostitution in the Netherlands explains how the CBS estimate is built.

How many sex workers are there?

There is no official count of sex workers. A 2021 study for the research institute of the Dutch Ministry of Justice (WODC) estimated 373 to 379 licensed sex businesses nationwide, against 833 in a 2014 study. The report gives both figures and notes that several larger municipalities are missing from its count.

The same study counted more than 27,000 unique online adverts in a year, with 6,500 to 7,000 active at any one time. It warns that advert counts are not a headcount: some workers are missed and others are counted more than once.

For Amsterdam the city reports capacity, not people: 348 window workplaces and 63 workplaces in 13 clubs and private houses at the end of 2023.

The last municipal estimate we could find dates from 2007. The city’s research office then cited a public-health-service estimate of more than 1,000 sex workers active behind a window or in a sex club on a given day.

Trafficking: what the official figures say

The Dutch National Rapporteur recorded 944 reported victims of human trafficking in the Netherlands in 2024, 76 more than in 2023. These are national figures for every form of exploitation, not figures for De Wallen.

Sexual exploitation is the largest group. The 2024 report lists 364 registrations for international sexual exploitation and 123 for domestic sexual exploitation, together 487 registrations. A victim can be counted under more than one form, so this is not a share of the 944.

The report adds that an estimated 5,000 people a year are victims of trafficking in the Netherlands.

Amsterdam had 167 tolerated coffeeshops at the end of 2024, the same number as in 2021 and five fewer than in 2015. A separate municipal dataset, based on a retail count, lists 17 coffeeshop outlets in Burgwallen-Oude Zijde and 165 in the city on 1 January 2026.

Methodology and sources

We used published official sources: the City of Amsterdam and its research department, the Amsterdam Court of Audit, Statistics Netherlands, the research institute of the Ministry of Justice, the National Rapporteur, the Public Prosecution Service and published law. Where we found no official figure, we say so and give no estimate of our own. Two figures are estimates passed on by an official body: the 2007 sex-worker estimate and the retail count of coffeeshop outlets.

Most neighbourhood figures cover the whole district Burgwallen-Oude Zijde, not only the streets with windows. Survey figures reflect what residents report, not measured events.

Moulin Rouge vs Amor Rosso：选一个座位，还是选一家酒吧

Moulin Rouge 和 Amor Rosso 之间怎么选，是红灯区里至今仍被搞错的一道题，因为网上有一半的信息还把 Amor Rosso 叫作 Hospital Bar。那些页面描述的护士主题酒吧已经不存在了。

两个门口，同一条运河

两家场所都位于 Oudezijds Achterburgwal，这条运河从红灯区正中穿过。Moulin Rouge 在 5-7 号，Amor Rosso 在 97 号，两者之间的 37 号是 Banana Bar。

Hospital Bar 这个名字已经消失

Oudezijds Achterburgwal 97 号现在以 AMOR ROSSO – BY CASA ROSSO 的名义营业，新名字就挂在楼的正面。地址没变，电话也没变，+31 (0)20 627 89 54。原来的 hospitalbar.nl 网址会跳转到 Amor Rosso 的网站。

Hospital Bar 从前是什么样

Hospital Bar 做的是医院主题，而且做得很彻底。舞者穿着护士服端酒、跳钢管舞，还出售由一位“医生”煞有介事开出来的大腿舞，座位用的是病床。那个年代的第三方页面写着入场费约 €25 含一杯酒，营业时间大约 19:00 到 02:00，周末到 03:00。

那些数字都作废了。别按着它们跑到 97 号去，也别理会任何还在写 €25 左右和护士服的页面。

Walk east from the Oude Kerk and the windows give way to red lanterns. Zeedijk and the streets around Nieuwmarkt are Amsterdam’s Chinatown, anchored by the He Hua Temple — the largest Chinese Buddhist temple in Europe, opened in 2000. This is the single best-value place to eat near the Red Light District, and where most of our guests are surprised by the quality.

Nam Kee is the name locals drop first. This no-frills Cantonese spot on Zeedijk built its reputation on oysters in black bean sauce — a dish so tied to the place that a bestselling Dutch novel and film were named after it. Expect paper tablecloths, fast service and a queue at peak times.

Hoi Tin a few doors down is the bigger, banquet-style option: roast duck and pork in the window, a long menu of Cantonese classics, and space for groups. For Thai on the same street, Kooning van Siam has been a Zeedijk institution for decades, set in a restored 17th-century canal house.

Best Thai & Southeast Asian Near De Wallen

The district’s most famous kitchen isn’t Dutch — it’s Thai. The Bird runs two rooms across Zeedijk from each other: a cramped snack bar and a slightly roomier restaurant, both turning out som tam, curries and pad kee mao that regulars swear match what you’d eat in Bangkok. Come early or expect to wait.

Little Saigon covers the Vietnamese side with pho, fresh spring rolls and banh mi — light, cheap and quick between sights. For Indonesian rijsttafel and Thai heat there’s Bunga Mawar and Mekhong River nearby, while Restaurant Tibet on Lange Niezel serves Tibetan and Sichuan dishes a short walk from the windows.

You didn’t come to the Netherlands to skip the Dutch food. The Amsterdamsche Vishandel near Nieuwmarkt is the old-school fish stall for raw herring served with onion and pickle, plus crispy kibbeling to eat on the move. It’s the most Dutch two minutes you’ll spend in the district.

For something sweet, pannenkoeken (Dutch pancakes) are sold thin and plate-sized with sweet or savoury toppings at pancake houses near the Dam. And no visit is complete without patat — Belgian-style fries with mayonnaise or a dozen other sauces — from one of the snack windows on Warmoesstraat. It’s the honest version of the fast food the tourist traps overcharge for.

Sit-Down & Hidden Gems

The district’s worst-kept fine-dining secret is Blauw aan de Wal. You reach it down an easy-to-miss passage off Oudezijds Achterburgwal — the same canal lined with windows — and emerge into a quiet brick courtyard. The Mediterranean-Dutch menu has kept it among the highest-rated restaurants in central Amsterdam for years. Book ahead; this is the one place here you can’t walk into.

For a candlelit dinner without the price tag, small owner-run kitchens like Tomaz and Restaurant Van Kerkwijk sit just west of the district and change their menu with the market. They’re where locals go when they want a proper meal but not a special-occasion bill.

Breakfast, Brunch & Coffee (Not the Other Kind)

Here’s what our guides tell every group. The restaurants with laminated photo menus, hosts waving you in, and “Argentinean steakhouse” signs on the main drag — Warmoesstraat and the two window canals — are almost always the overpriced ones. The rule is simple:

• Walk two minutes east to Zeedijk or Nieuwmarkt. Prices drop and quality jumps the moment you leave the busiest windows.
• Follow the local crowd. A Chinese or Vietnamese kitchen full of Chinese and Vietnamese diners is the best menu review you’ll get.
• Skip anywhere with a host on the street. Good restaurants here don’t need to pull you in.

Its iconic yellow and red vending machines, which dispense classic Dutch treats like kroketten (croquettes) and frikandellen (fried sausages), are a must-try for anyone visiting the 荷兰.

Walk on in and pull a deep fried snack from the automatique. Try out local delicacies like the kroket – a breaded deep fried cow or veal meat ragout which is super crispy on the outside and soft and creamy on the inside.

Our local guide took this photo of this temple on the Zeedijk street.

Amsterdam has its very own little Chinatown. It was first established in the year 1911 and is the oldest Chinese neighbourhood on European soil. Since the year 2000 the area has had a Fo Guang Shan He Hua Tempel which is the largest Chinese style religious building in Europe. Visit this temple for free!

Besides this highlight this is the place you want to be for asian food. All types of Asian restaurants can be found in this area including Thai, Indonesian, Japanese and Malaysian food.

13 | Sex Worker Statue

There are only two places in the world where there are statues for 性工作者 and one of them is in the middle of Amsterdam Red Light District – just next to The 老教堂. The Dutch are quite tolerant and open-minded. Just two reasons why you can find this sex worker statue here, right in the old city centre.

14 | Amsterdam’s Oldest House

On one of the oldest streets in the capital you can find the oldest house. Funny thing is is that this house was only discovered to be the oldest house back in 2010. The old house with a wooden skeleton dates back to 1485 but stands hidden behind a facade dating back to 1800. Before this discovery the wooden house at the Begijnhof was considered to be the oldest house in Amsterdam. Amsterdam’s oldest house is currently functioning as a gay club named Dirty Dicks.

We took this photo of this piece of street art at the Oudekerksplein.

De Wallen is filled with street art from graffiti to actual bronze items. This bronze plaque was placed secretly at night on the street of the Oudekerksplein.

After noise complaints from the neighbourhood from people stepping on the plaque it was removed by the municipality. The secret artist came forward and a deal was struck with the municipality. The plaque was placed at another spot and the artist remains anonymous.

De Wallen Amsterdam

First of all, some basic information: De Wallen – the Dutch name for the Amsterdam’s Red Light District – is the oldest and most fascinating part of Holland’s capital. And, it’s one of the three prostitution areas in the capital. The other two are located on the Ruysdaelkade and the Singel and the Spuistraat.
