Magic truffles in Amsterdam: are they legal, and how do you use them?
On our walks through the Red Light District, one question comes up more than almost any other: “Can I do magic mushrooms in Amsterdam?” The honest answer catches most people off guard – and getting it wrong can cost you a fine, or a rough afternoon. Here’s what we tell them.
Short answer: Magic truffles are legal in the Netherlands and sold in smartshops to adults 18+. Magic mushrooms were banned in 2008, but the truffle (the underground “sclerotia”) was never added to the banned list – so truffles are the legal way to try psilocybin in Amsterdam. They’re still not risk-free, and you can’t take them out of the country.

What are magic truffles?
So what are you actually buying? Magic truffles – properly called sclerotia, and sometimes “philosopher’s stones” – are the hard, underground part of certain psilocybin fungi. Not the mushroom cap you’re picturing; the lumpy bit that grows beneath it.
Eat the right amount and the psilocybin shifts how you see and feel: colours lift, patterns seem to drift, and most people get waves of giddy, reflective calm. It can also tip into something uncomfortable – which is exactly why the dose and your mindset matter so much.
Magic truffles vs magic mushrooms: what’s the difference?
This is where almost everyone gets confused. People come to Amsterdam looking for “magic mushrooms” – but you can’t legally buy those any more. Truffles are the legal stand-in, and they come from the same family.

Same active compound, so the experience is broadly similar. Truffles are simply the part of the fungus that stayed on the right side of the law.
Why are magic truffles legal but mushrooms aren’t?
Here’s the short history. Until 2008, smartshops sold psilocybin mushrooms openly. After a run of incidents involving tourists – including a 2007 case in which a French teenager died – the Netherlands banned the mushrooms, effective 1 December 2008.
But the ban named the mushroom, not the sclerotia underneath it. Truffles were never on the list, so they stayed legal – and, as of 2026, they still are, sold openly in smartshops. It’s a genuine legal line, not a loophole the shops are quietly exploiting.

You buy truffles in a smartshop, never a 咖啡店 (coffeeshops are for cannabis). We’ve pointed plenty of nervous first-timers toward the smartshops around the 红灯区, like Kokopelli on the Warmoesstraat.
The staff there do this every single day – tell them it’s your first time and they’ll steer you to a gentle strain and a sensible dose. Bring ID: you need to be 18 or older, and you pay per pack.
What do magic truffles cost?
A fresh pack (around 15 grams) runs about €12–€18, depending on the strain and strength. For a first trip that one pack is plenty – honestly, most people do fine on half. Prices barely move between Amsterdam smartshops, so you don’t need to shop around.
Effects & how long a truffle trip lasts

Effects usually creep in 30 to 60 minutes after you eat them and last roughly 4 to 6 hours, rolling in waves before they fade. Expect sharper senses, big emotions and the odd fit of laughter.
The one to watch for is a bad trip – anxiety, nausea or thoughts stuck on a loop, usually in that first hour or two. If it hits, remind yourself it’s just the truffles and it will pass; some fruit juice (the vitamin C helps), a snack or a short walk usually takes the edge off. And no – you won’t be sleeping until it wears off.
How to take magic truffles safely
A little planning saves a lot of grief. What we tell people before they head off:
- Empty stomach: eat them a couple of hours after food, and chew well – it helps with nausea.
- Start low: take a smaller dose first. You can always wish you’d taken more; you can’t take less once it’s down.
- Set & setting: a calm, familiar place with people you trust – and not alone if it’s your first time.
- Don’t mix: no alcohol, cannabis, medication or other drugs.
- Give it time: wait a full hour before even thinking about more.
Please don’t take magic truffles if you are under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of depression or psychosis, are about to drive or cycle, or take medication that affects your nervous system. If you’re unsure, don’t – and just ask the smartshop staff.
