Dam Square is the historic heart of Holland’s capital and the location of many events of national significance. One of the most important national events held on Dam Square is Remembrance Day.

“De Dam” derives its name from its original function: a dam on Amsterdam’s Amstel river. This is how Amsterdam got its name. Built in approximately 1270, the dam formed the first connection between the settlements on the sides of the river.
