Dingen die je altijd al wilde weten van een Nederlandse prostituee

We spoke with Caja van Tolie – a sex worker who works in the Netherlands. We met each other at the Koffie Schenkerij in Amsterdam’s Red Light District.

Caja werkt al 16 jaar als prostituee. We keken ernaar uit om haar te ontmoeten, omdat we echt meer wilden weten over haar beroep en ervaringen. Dit is wat we haar vroegen:

Since 1999. I started at the Red Light District van Amsterdam. I also worked in Groningen for a while but decided to go back to Amsterdam. When I worked in Amsterdam’s Red Light District again, the mayor of Amsterdam decided to introduce more stringent regulations which women have to meet when working as a prostitute.

That’s one of the reasons I decided to work in Utrecht in plaats van Amsterdam. Terugkijkend werden de regels in Utrecht na een tijdje strenger dan die in Amsterdam, wat leidde tot een gedwongen einde van mijn werk als Nederlandse prostituee.

Are you planning to work again as a Dutch prostitute in Amsterdam’s Red Light District?

Nee, helemaal niet. De Red Light District van Amsterdam is de afgelopen 15 jaar veranderd. Ik verkies de Red Light District zoals die vroeger was.

It’s not your cup of tea anymore?

A lot of people walk by, but there’s a small percentage who really visit a prostitute here. That’s why the prostitutes are experiencing difficulties in earning the rent for the windows. I personally think the earnings are too low. But everyone has their own opinion.

Waarom ben je Nederlandse prostituee geworden?

I had to take care of myself at a young age. I still had to learn how to take some responsibilities. I went over my marks and was looking for a way to pay off my debts in a short amount of time. It would give me the opportunity to continue with my my education. That’s when Prostitutie came in.

Ik had mijn schulden in één dag afbetaald en genoot eigenlijk van de sfeer in de Red Light District. In de jaren negentig was de Red Light District net een klein dorp waar iedereen heel vriendelijk was.

Iedereen had gewoon dolle pret! Ik hield mezelf voor dat ik zou stoppen met werken als Nederlandse prostituee wanneer ik daar zin in had. Nou, ik ben onlangs gestopt, maar dat kwam doordat de ramen in Utrecht werden gesloten. Ik vond het werk nog steeds leuk, maar het moest gebeuren.

What are the pro’s of being a Dutch prostitute?

There are a lot of pro’s! The job offers a feeling of freedom. You’re able to plan your own shifts. The high income is another pro of course.

Also, I like the entertainment part of the job. Im always very happy during my shifts and have a lot of pleasant experiences. I can’t imagine that someone wouldn’t like to earn money in this way!

And what are the cons?

Het nadeel is dat prostitutie wordt gestigmatiseerd. Mensen denken dat prostituees doelloos slachtoffer zijn van mensenhandel. Die vergelijking is totaal misplaatst.

Do you tell everybody that you’re a prostitute, for example when you’re visiting a birthday party?

Tegenwoordig wel. Dat komt ook doordat ik een paar keer op televisie ben geweest, dus veel mensen kennen me al.

Vertelde je mensen erover toen je net begon als Nederlandse prostituee?

In the very beginning I kept it as a secret but my mother sensed something was going on… Like only mothers can. At a certain point she asked if I was working in Prostitutie.

Dat was het moment waarop ik het haar vertelde. Daarna heb ik ook enkele andere familieleden over mijn kleine geheim verteld. Maar niet de hele familie, dus niet iedereen wist het. Maar zoals ik al zei, tegenwoordig weet iedereen het.

Did you like your job?

Ja, ik heb altijd gevonden dat dit het mooiste beroep van allemaal is.

Wat vond je er het leukst aan?

That’s hard to explain. I just experience an enjoyable feeling when I’m working. It feels like I’m onstage and that creates excitement. And I always have enjoyable conversations with both regular clients and strangers. So I always have fun during my shifts as a Dutch prostitute.

Heb je altijd seks met je klanten?

Nee, niet altijd. Sommige klanten gaan liever uit eten of naar een hotel en anderen gaan graag naar het strand. Er zijn zoveel klanten met verschillende verlangens.

Sommige mensen vinden het moeilijk voor te stellen dat prostituees hun werk doen omdat ze dat willen. Wat denk je dat de reden voor die gedachte is?

It’s because they don’t know much about the sector. Actually, I had the same thought about prostitutes before I started working as one. People can’t imagine that you decide for yourself that you want to work as a prostitute because it’s not necessary to make a living. In fact, people who are out of work are paid benefits in Nederland. So why would you become a prostitute when it’s not necessary? But when I started to work as a prostitute I noticed the feeling of freedom that this job offers. I can’t think of another job which offers the same amount of freedom.

Wat is het verschil tussen de Red Light District in Amsterdam en het prostitutiegebied in Utrecht?

To work at the Red Light District is all about entertainment and is the most fun when you’re around an age of 18. Everybody is having a blast and that causes a lot of drunk and singing people in the streets. People walk a lot before going to a prostitute because the area is very large and beautiful. Also, because the visitors are mostly tourists a lot of them don’t even go to a prostitute. When I just started as a prostitute this didn’t bother me. But when getting older I desired a workplace that offered more serious clients. In Utrecht, the area consisted of boats lying in a line which served as brothels. Men picked the prostitute of their preference when driving by in their car. The workplace in Utrecht attracted mostly Dutch businessmen who often stayed a couple of hours instead of only 15 minutes. Also, contrary to the Red Light District, in Utrecht we had our own bath, toilet and kitchen. So the clients and the way of working is totally different in Utrecht. And that really meets my current preferences.

Did you also have tourists as your clients in Utrecht’s Red Light District?

Soms kwamen mijn klanten uit Duitsland, België en soms het Verenigd Koninkrijk, maar de meesten kwamen uit Nederland.

Hoeveel betaalde je om een bordeel in Utrecht te huren?

De huur is € 650 voor 7 dagen en 12 uur per dag in Utrecht. Ik werkte parttime omdat de verdiensten heel hoog waren. Ik kon de huur voor het bordeel al na 1 of maximaal 2 dagen betalen. De rest van de week had ik de vrijheid om te beslissen wat ik wilde doen. De ene week werkte ik 3 dagen en de andere week 4 dagen. Ik hield echt van de vrijheid die dit bood.

Vind je dat prostitutie overal ter wereld gelegaliseerd moet worden? En zo ja, waarom?

Ik vind dat prostitutie een legale optie voor vrouwen zou moeten zijn. Wanneer vrouwen het moeilijk hebben door bijvoorbeeld een echtscheiding, moeten ze in de meeste gevallen alleen voor hun kinderen zorgen. Ze zouden het recht moeten hebben om te kiezen om als prostituee te werken en tegelijk hun onafhankelijkheid te behouden. Op die manier kunnen vrouwen in hun eigen levensonderhoud voorzien.

Hoeveel vrouwen werken er in het prostitutiegebied in Utrecht?

In totaal waren er 162 ramen met 2 shifts per raam. Er werkten dus zo'n 330 vrouwen.

Hoeveel prostituees in Nederland werken voor een pooier?

In Utrecht the women work pretty independently. In the Red Light District they work mostly with 3 women in a brothel, but they have their own room. I think there are some pimps in Amsterdam but I have hardly seen one in Utrecht. The brothel owners are also pretty strict in banning pimps. But, unfortunately, human trafficking does still exist and I think it will never be banned completely. As a brothel owner you can do your best to cooperate with the local government but you’re never totally sure if a prostitute is working for a pimp or not.

Heb je, of heb je ooit een pooier gehad?

No, I never had one. But during my career I’ve seen a lot of women who had a pimp and actually really wanted to work for him themselves. And sometimes people think the boyfriend of a Dutch prostitute is their pimp as well. So people have their own definition of a pimp. For me, a pimp is someone who takes your money, who abuses you and forces you to prostitute yourself. I think a partner of a prostitute who is totally ok with her profession and has his own profession is not a pimp. But like I said, some people think he is in that case.

Hoeveel procent van de prostituees in Nederland is volgens jou slachtoffer van mensenhandel?

According to the most recent research on this subject it’s less than 2 %. I think this corresponds with what I notice around me. I do agree that human trafficking does occur but it’s definitely not the case that every Dutch prostitute is a victim. The local government publishes higher numbers of human trafficking because they have their own interest in tidying up the Red Light District because the houses are worth a lot of money. Apart from the local government, religious people also publicise negative information about the Red Light District because of their religious objections.

Wat denk je dat er aan de huidige regels moet veranderen?

The most ideal situation would be that there are no more special rules for prostitution but that prostitutes are treated the same as other entrepreneurs. If we’re talking about rules for forced prostitution, it has to be forbidden to threaten or abuse women. A lot of serious crime is already covered under the current rules so I think there’s no need for specific prostitution legislation.

Betaal je ook belasting zoals elke andere ondernemer?

Yes, I’m also registered at the Chamber of Commerce.

Doe je je eigen belastingaangifte of heb je een accountant?

Ik heb een accountant die dat doet.

Ben je ooit gecontroleerd door de overheid, zoals de Belastingdienst?

Yes, sometimes they come along to check the book-keeping so we have to store it at our working place. They even check your wallet for cash money to make sure you’re not lying about your daily income!

Wat voor veiligheidsmaatregelen werden er toegepast in de bordelen waar je hebt gewerkt?

It has changed through the years. There were no rules when I started as a Dutch prostitute in 1999. To rent a window all you needed was a name so you didn’t need to show your passport. Shortly before the closedown of the boats in Utrecht every woman had to be registered as a prostitute at the kamer van koophandel, de lokale overheid en de politie. Zo werden de regels door de jaren heen strenger.

Klopt het dat prostituees in Nederland geen hypotheek of bepaalde verzekeringen kunnen afsluiten?

Ja, helaas is dat het geval. Als Nederlandse prostituee is de ING is the only bank in Holland which provides me with a private bank account. It’s impossible to get a business account. Getting a mortgage is also out of the question. We are told that being a prostitute is an insecure profession because it’s hard to tell what a prostitute will earn 5 years later. But I think this situation is exactly the same for a baker for example, who ís able to get a mortgage or insurance. Some banks are not ashamed of this kind of discrimination at all and are very transparent in the fact that they don’t want prostitutes as their customers.

Wat zijn je plannen voor de toekomst?

Mijn belangrijkste doel is om bordeeleigenaar te worden van een aantal ramen in het centrum van Utrecht. Samen met een voormalige collega heb ik een vergunning aangevraagd voor die brothels and it looks like we can start in a couple of months. I’ll be responsible for a whole street of windows so I won’t work as a prostitute anymore. I’ll have to conform to all the rules and regulations which will take a lot of time because like I said, the local government is very strict in Utrecht. If it were to become clear that only one prostitute is a victim of human trafficking, the whole street would be closed down. 50 Dutch prostitute in total will work there so I will have a big responsibility. I would love to continue as a prostitute but I’ll won’t have the time for it.

Wat vind je van vrouwen die uit nieuwsgierigheid langs de ramen lopen?

I don’t have any problems with them as long as they behave normally. Some women are pointing, laughing or have comments and that can be disturbing. But after all, we are very used to people who are passing by, both women and men. As long as their behaving appropriately there’s no problem.

Wat betaalt een klant voor een bezoek?

The minimum rate is 50 euro’s for 15 minutes. This rate is the same in Amsterdam and Utrecht.

Accepteer je betalingen met credit- of pinpas? Waarom (niet)?

No, I only accept cash because otherwise I need to have my own machine which is inconvenient, because I don’t have s business bank account. Also, clients don’t want to have a bank record of a visit to a prostitute.

Hoe vaak laat je je testen op seksueel overdraagbare aandoeningen (soa's)? En is dat verplicht?

I test on a regular basis. It is not mandatory for a Dutch prostitute but it’s wise to do so. Prostitutes don’t have to pay for a test, but clients do.

Wat doe je als een klant ruikt of er vies uitziet?

Voordat ik seks heb met een klant, vraag ik of ze zich willen wassen. In Utrecht hadden we vroeger een bad, dus het was onderdeel van het spel om een bad te nemen voordat de actie begon.

Krijg je weleens een orgasme tijdens de seks met je klanten? Zo ja, hoe vaak gebeurt dat?

Ja, het gebeurt soms. Maar niet regelmatig. Ik zou zeggen maandelijks, dus niet zo vaak.

Wat is het vreemdste verzoek dat je ooit van een klant hebt gekregen?

Overall, my clients are pretty normal but sometimes I get requests I don’t expect. For example going to the beach and getting paid for it.

Heb je nog advies voor vrouwen die als Nederlandse prostituee willen werken?

Mijn advies is om er goed over na te denken! En je moet eerst een kijkje nemen in een bordeel om je een beeld te vormen voordat je begint. Je moet goed voorbereid zijn!
