Finding the best weed strains in Amsterdam sounds easy until you’re staring at a coffeeshop menu with dozens of names. Pick wrong and you waste money on a bag that doesn’t suit you. So I smoked my way around the Barrio Rojo de Ámsterdam and its coffeeshops to find six strains worth trying. Here’s each one, where to buy it, and how it tastes.

White Widow

My first stop is Coffeeshop Bulldog. Established in 1975 in a former police station, Bulldog was the first coffee shop in Amsterdam and has been a monument to the liberal Dutch attitude towards weed ever since. Here you can enjoy ‘White Widow’, a type of weed known for its strong, pleasant effect and its distinctive resinous, sweet taste.

Super Silver Haze

A short walk from the Bulldog is the Greenhouse. It sells a range of cannabis seeds under its namesake brand, as well as the classic ‘Super Silver Haze’, a three-time winner of the High Times Cup. This Sativa-dominant strain has a pleasant citrus flavor and offers an uplifting and energetic feeling.

Northern Lights

For those who prefer something more relaxing, ‘Northern Lights’ is one of the most popular Indica strains. It has a sweet, spicy taste and is sold at Barney’s Coffeeshop. The Grey Area is a small but popular spot. Its ‘Gelato’ tastes of sweet Italian ice cream and tropical fruit, good for a sunny afternoon on the canals.

Amnesia Haze

White Widow is the most smoked weed in Amsterdam, but the number two deserves a mention too. I’ll close with ‘Amnesia Haze’, sold at Coffeeshop Amnesia. This award-winning strain runs from lemon to musk and hits with a strong, euphoric effect.
