Magic truffles – properly called sclerotia, and sometimes “philosopher’s stones” – are the hard, underground part of certain psilocybin fungi. Not the mushroom cap you’re picturing; the lumpy bit that grows beneath it.

Eat the right amount and the psilocybin shifts how you see and feel: colours lift, patterns seem to drift, and most people get waves of giddy, reflective calm. It can also tip into something uncomfortable – which is exactly why the dose and your mindset matter so much.

Magic truffles vs magic mushrooms: what’s the difference?

This is where almost everyone gets confused. People come to Amsterdam looking for “magic mushrooms” – but you can’t legally buy those any more. Truffles are the legal stand-in, and they come from the same family.

Magic mushrooms

Magic truffles

Legal in NL?

Banned (since 2008)

Legal

Wat het is

The fruiting body, above ground

The sclerotia, below ground

Active compound

Psilocybin

Psilocybin (the same)

Where to buy

Not sold legally

Smartshops

Strength

Often stronger

Usually milder, easier to dose

Same active compound, so the experience is broadly similar. Until 2008, smartshops sold psilocybin mushrooms openly. After a run of incidents involving tourists – including a 2007 case in which a French teenager died – the Netherlands banned the mushrooms, effective 1 December 2008.

But the ban named the mushroom, not the sclerotia underneath it. Truffles were never on the list, so they stayed legal – and, as of 2026, they still are, sold openly in smartshops. It’s a genuine legal line, not a loophole the shops are quietly exploiting.

Where to buy magic truffles in Amsterdam

Smartshop Kokopelli on the Warmoesstraat in the Red Light District – our own photo.

You buy truffles in a smartshop, never a coffeeshop (coffeeshops are for cannabis).
