At the end of March people will be able, for a one time only, to dine at unique locations throughout the city of Amsterdam. Locations include the famous Madame Tussauds and a window brothel restaurant in the Red Light District.
During Amsterdam Eet Uit! (Amsterdam Eats Out!) participants will be able to wine and dine on seven different locations that normally don’t offer that kind of hospitality services. Besides Madame Tussauds and the window brothel restaurant, people can also dine on the “holy grass” in the Amsterdam Arena (Home of football club Ajax), the hurdy-gurdy museum, in the cabin of an Amsterdam ferryboat, a penthouse that is under construction at the Zuidas (literally South Axis; a rapidly developing high rise business district) and in a steamboat at the shipping museum.
Dishes won’t be made on the spot. Participants will be able to order their food via an app from the Foodora delivery service. The ordered food will be prepared in an existing restaurant and will be sent via a bicycle courier to for instance the window brothel restaurant.
Amsterdam Eats Out! Is an initiative by creative company Shoreditch together with Foodora. Shoreditch has made a name for itself with other creative actions like the bubble-cinema, the disco supermarket and a tomato fight on the Dam Square in the centre of Amsterdam. Founder Joep Verbunt states: “this concept is a tribute to the pearls of the city of Amsterdam. All the locations are places where you normally walk by without noticing them, not realising how special they are, or places that take your breath away when you look at them”
Despite the fact that this is a one-time-thing, there is opposition too. In general, prostitutes are not huge fans of changing window brothels into restaurants, shops or art galeries. They need these places to work. The last few years, the local government has closed many brothels making it more difficult for sex workers to rent a working space in the Red Light District.
Window shortages are at its highest during nightshifts. Most prostitutes prefer working in the nighttime. More customers roaming the streets during the night equals more money. Day shifts bring in considerably less. Did you know that there is actually a waiting list for the night shifts of window brothels in Amsterdam?
Would you like to have dinner in a window brothel restaurant or in Amsterdam’s football stadium on the 31st of March 2016? This is where you need to be for Participating. Costs are 30,- euros.
