RESTAURANTS

On the Nieuwmarkt you can find the most impressive of Amsterdam's remaining city gates. It was called St. Anthony's Gate and it was built in 1488 but eventually became obsolete. It was then used as a weigh station for merchants. The appartments upstairs were used by local guilds, including the surgeons guild. Every once in a while they would actually dissect a freshly executed criminal, which was open for the public. They also became obsolete and eventually it became the restaurant that it is right now, called "In De Waag".

It's located on the New Market Square which is full of cafes and bars and also a market of course, true to its name.

Steak restaurant Toro Dorado serves a selection of quality steaks, grilled to perfection. Choose from Royal Wagyu Kobe Select, Scottish Aberdeen Angus or Argentinian Hereford. A friendly relaxed restaurant in the city centre.

Fast food

If you are feeling lazy and don't wanna go to a restaurant in Amsterdam (or anywhere else in Holland), the best thing to do is just order some food at your hotel/ hostel and got it delivered. If you wanna do so, we advice you to use this website. This is a portal where you can order Chinese, Pizza, Hamburgers, Grill, etc, etc.

They also take orders for breakfast, like sandwiches... Just insert the zipcode of your hotel or hostel and it will search for the nearest food-company around. It also provides different languages, for example English, German, French and Dutch (of course).

Also good to know: this website also offers a service where you can order your beer online and got it delivered anywhere in Amsterdam! :-)

  1. Herring | The traditional way is to take it by the tail, add some onions and lower it down to your mouth.
  2. Stroopwafels | Nice sweet waffles with caramelized sugar. You can find these at any supermarket, orĀ  if you're lucky you can buy fresh ones at the market
  3. Erwtensoup | Thick soup that is mostly consumed in winter. Love it or hate it...
  4. Kroket | An acquired taste: A deep fried meaty and crispy snack, that you can have at any snack bar. Or do as the Dutch and get it from a wallmounted machine (don't ask, you'll recognize it when you see one).
  5. Poffertjes | Small sweet pancakes consumed with powdered sugar.

With around 800 different restaurants to choos from, there is no risk of going hungry in Amsterdam and with so much variety and so many different national cuisines available, there is something to cater for everyone's taste.

Seafood, as you might imagine in this traditionally seafaring country, is a big deal, and there are various good seafood restaurants in the city. The cuisines from Asia and the Far East are also popular and you will no doubt notice the vast number of Indonesion, Thai and Chinese restaurant in the city, mostly are located near by the red-light district area.

Other international cuisines you can find in the city include: Italian, French, Japanese, Greek, Argentinian, Indian & Turkish. In this part of the website we'll show some of our favourite eating establishments, all of which vary in price and stature, but all of which have some kind of appeal.
